Programs

The following programs are offered at St. Matthew School:

ENGLISH PROGRAM

The English Program follows the program of studies outlined by Alberta Learning and Edmonton Catholic Schools.

UKRAINIAN BILINGUAL PROGRAM

The Ukrainian bilingual program is a partial immersion program. The core or basic subjects are taught in English.  In this program the students continue to develop English language skills and learn Ukrainian for up to 50% of the school day.  The students are also exposed to many traditional and religious aspects of the culture throughout the year.  St. Matthew has offered the Ukrainian bilingual education since the Bilingual program’s inception in l974.

An exciting new optional program is being unveiled at St. Matthew for our Ukrainian Bilingual Program come September, 2009. This program is designed for the serious dancer and parallels sports academies in Junior and Senior High Schools.  The Ukrainian Dance Academy will only be available to a select number of students and remains as an option to students enrolled at St. Matthew School.

FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

French is offered to both the students in the English Program and Ukrainian Bilingual program in grades 4 to 6.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Students, who require assistance due to individual needs in one or more areas, may be recommended for special programming.  Based on standardized testing, parent request, or teacher recommendation, a student may receive supplementary teaching support either in the classroom, small group or one-to-one setting.

The Elementary Academic Support program (ASP) is District program offered at our school for grades 5 and 6.

Students in these programs are required to have Individual Program Plan (IPP)

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Our students who are Canadian citizens or immigrants whose first language is not English are provided with a special, government-funded program.  Supplementary teaching assistance, either within the classroom or in a small group setting, is scheduled several times per week.
